Coffee Chats

*originally posted in the ER forum, but nobody reads those*

I'm currently a WM intern at a BB. It's client-facing; I want to do ER instead and change to a more research-oriented role. Is there a "best" way to go about networking for an ER position? Would it be acceptable for me to message people currently in ER roles (via corporate directory) at my BB and try to set up a 15 minute chat? Also, do "coffee chats" actually imply grabbing coffee with that person, or is it generally interpreted to mean a phone call? Obviously if they're on the east coast and I'm on the west coast we can't grab coffee, but would it be better for those who are in my vicinity? I'd appreciate any advice on the matter. TY
