College Internship Process

Hi guys,

Im new to this forum so go easy on me. This fall I will be a freshman at Columbia and intend to major in chemE. However, i want to get a job as an ibanker with a BB after i graduate and was wondering, how early do i need to start getting internships? Some people told me that you need to start freshman year but others say i just need to nail one my junior-senior summer. Ive tried searching on this site for the definitive answer but i couldnt find it. Any input is appreciated, thanks.

I recommend that you start searching during your sophomore year. BB's have sophomore programs for people interested in banking but as far as I know, freshmen are usually not considered (of course, there are exceptions). Most people will tell you to chill during your freshman summer and I agree 100%. Just focus on having fun and getting good grades.

Definitely start sophomore year - it's perfectly ok to take it a little easier freshman year. You can do a study abroad program or something. Alternatively, you can prep for your sophomore year summer job interviews by working somewhere like Moody's or the Fed during freshman summer - something financial and relevent that isn't a BB firm (which aren't interested in freshmen at all generally).
