Commute from Central NJ to NYC?
What would be the best way to commute to NYC as a first year analyst in ER? Would it be feasible to drive into the city every morning (both time and cost wise), or is it better to rent an apartment in north jersey and commute in by train? Parents live in central jersey, so I would be saving on rent if I stayed with them. However, wouldn't want to negatively affect my job either with a long commute. What's the best option?
For so many reasons don’t do that.
First, consider you social life. Getting drinks/hanging out after work is much harder to do with a commute (especially a drive if you want to drink). Seeing friends on weekends. Going on dates. It all becomes much harder.
Second, your mental and physical health. Depending on where in jersey, the commute will be at least an hour, probably more like 90 mins+ (getting to train station, buffer for missing train, subway to work, etc) and driving would be an absolute sh*t show with traffic. You will have little time for yourself (outside of being on the train) and getting exercise in will be much harder.
Third, your job performance (including the networking you can miss out on from having this commute). You will be more tired, be stressed about getting back home, etc.
Don’t be penny wise but pound foolish. The money you save at this point won’t matter if you have a successful career. Additionally, it’s important to learn to be an adult at this stage.
There are situations where this can make sense: 40 hour work weeks, parents need support/money, high debt any you need to save, etc. But outside of that, I wouldn’t recommend it.
This makes a ton of sense, thank you.
Depends on how far into NJ. I know multiple VPs and MDs that commute daily (park and ride RARV and PATH). Doable, probably 90minutes each way. Many work on the way. I wouldn’t do this early career though.
