Competition between 1st and 2nd year Analysts?

Fellow Monkeys - Is there anyone else who has experienced levels of competition between 1st and 2nd year analysts in IB? May be overthinking this, but feel as if the second year analyst in my group likes to take credit for all the work that’s done between us. On the deals and pitches we work on together, whatever work I complete, he always wants to “check over” and change a few things once I am done. After this, he will email the deliverable to the Associate/VP/Director on that deal. Seems that he may want to take credit for the work over me to look as if he is the one doing all of the work.

Am I overthinking this for him trying to take credit for the work I am doing?

He's a senior analyst and is more experienced than you so he knows what the seniors want more than you. You're only six months in so of course, he will change some things to minimize comments. He also sends the work himself because it's faster and easier. Do you really want him to send it back to you and tell you to send it out? This is what analysts complain that their associates do to them.

If you really want to send it to the seniors to "take credit", then go ahead and ask him that you want to be the one to send it. He will most likely say: "Oh, I was just doing it because I thought it'd be faster but sure, no problem."

As others have said, he's supposed to check your work and if he's making changes, it's probably because changes need to be made.  It's not necessarily that you've messed anything up, more likely that he has a better grasp on how to tailor formatting/verbiage to specific MDs' preferences.

Also, he's not taking credit for your work by sending it out.  I assume that your VP knows you're working on the deck regardless of if you send it or not.  Also, whoever sends a deliverable out is first in line to take heat if there is a bust somewhere, so I doubt his motives in sending are selfish.

I come from down in the valley, where mister when you're young, they bring you up to do like your daddy done
