Consumer/Retail

I recently accepted an offer at a top BB bank for the summer. One of the groups I am strongly considering is C&R. The bank I will be working at is #1 in Consumer and Retail, and C&R is an industry I’ve always been interested in. I also met with members of the team and it seems to have a great culture. Where do you see the future of C&R going?

Thank you for your reply. I posted this for a friend- his concern isn't really with the consumer side, but rather the retail side. He knows that people will continue to buy goods, but he is concerned that in the future, goods will be sold mainly online through ecommerce sites like Amazon. In most banks, ecommerce is often covered in the TMT group, so he is nervous that business will shift to the technology group in the future. We see the potential for increased m&a and capital raising transactions in the short term, as the industry is currently struggling and many companies need financing. However, our concern is more with potential long term future of the industry, as well as exit opportunities and job security in covering the industry.

Not to be rude, but this is a stupid question. Per Charizard there will always be consumer products and places to buy them.

If you're interested in C&R, take it. Your focus should be doing a good job not worrying about macro trends. There will always be C&R and, if anything, disruption creates pricing opportunities meaning there will probably be more interesting PE opportunities, not fewer.

Goldman's C&R is very strong.

State of TranceCenterview is the strongest boutique out there for C & R.

Very true.

However OP, to address your question: Centerview generally seems to take a negative view of the whole "exit opps" concept. As in, they may not help you, and you may have to cover your tracks/burn bridges on the way out.

I think a lot of guys from Citi left to MS in 08. I did a bloomberg search and it seemed like BAML and MS were tops with Goldman 3 in the last 12 months. Is MS up there to stay or did it just have an exceptionally strong past 12 months?
