CPA for IB
Does holding a CPA help at all in recruiting for IB?
Honestly heard from some friends who have their CPA and are trying to get in to IB that recruiters think it’s pretty much irrelevant. Wouldn’t having high level expertise and knowledge regarding financial statements help?
No, it does not help. Being seen as an accountant will honestly be seen as a negative to most.
It will help a ton and will make your life easier. Many people do the CPA route and they become phenomenal bankers. It’s not necessary but it’ll help you. I wouldn’t recommend doing it just to be a banker, it’s better to be the CPA who got his CPA because you wanted to be an accountant but now want to do IB.
You really won’t get much credit for it, especially if you didn’t actually use your CPA in an accounting role before transitioning to IB
I’ve been using my CPA, and I’m in a role that isn’t really auditing. I’m in the consulting division in EY doing equity valuations and financials modeling, about half of the work I do is valuation assurance and that is really the only auditing work I do.
