Credit Risk or Credit Flow S&T?
Hi guys,
I am a recent Master's graduate with some experience in equity derivatives S&T. I am currently face a choice between two offers. Both are from the same European Bank. One is their credit risks analyst position, while the other one is with their credit flow team as an entry-level S&T position. Well, credit risk is more of a risk management role whereas credit flow S&T is a front desk role. The cons for the S&T role is that it is started with a lot of trading support type of work, and the possibility of getting your own clients and covering own accounts in the future are limited (possible, but depends on how it goes). I am told that if I have experience and systematic credit risk training could lead to better exiting plans, such as to risk consulting, portfolio management and Asset Management etc. I need some advice on how to weigh between theses two offers. Besides, the two positions have similar base salary, but I believe the S&T role will have a better bonus. Personally I am not that concerned about the pay difference for these two roles. I am looking for better career development in the future.

well one is credit and the other is sales & trading. big difference in skill-sets, particularly if this is flow trading. credit risk would be the better stepping stone to credit research or IB
Thanks a lot for the advice. I think the credit risk involves more corporate finance, risk and financial analysis. I am looking for a transit to IB or consulting in the future.
I would be sales and trading, not credit risk. As an analyst, you want to be on a revenue-generating desk plain and simple. And of course the job starts with trade support... drop the sense of entitlement, you need a baseline before you can make markets/manage relationships.

It's front-office vs middle-office in very different functions. I think your own interests, goals, and personality should dictate this a lot more than anything that anyone online can tell someone.
What kind of "career development" are you looking for? Pay, work life, end role, etc?
Hi, Thanks for the advice. I have 6-month experience in sales and trading, so I am familiar with the culture and environment. I won't say that I like it, but it is fun working on a trading floor for me. But my interests are more towards corporate finance, problem-solving. So I hope to transit into IB or consulting, deal/engagement based work. I kinda missed the boat last summer while IB and consulting were actively recruiting. So, I am thinking about whether these two CA-CIB offers could be a relatively good start.

It's counterparty risk under the credit risk department. I am wondering what kind of exit plan or transition can be made after 1 or 2 years.

Counterparty risk is more tied with S&T roles. (Versus traditional underwriting where the credit function is more closely tied to banking)
Would recommend the S&T role if that is the case, since Counterparty credit is more focused on the trading limits.
The title is counterparty risk, but the MD I will be reporting to is the head of credit risk. He told me the job function involves a lot of industrial analysis, corporate finance etc. So i am assuming since it's a European bank, NYC branch, it is a relatively small team with cross-over functions within the team. So I can't make up a solid mind between this credit risk and a direct front-office flow trading offers. But I am looking for future opportunities in IB or consulting.
