Credit Suisse made me rethink
Ok so I’m an associate at CS ECM. Have been in CS ECM for 4 years. Pretty sure I and my team will be fired soon based on what I hear. Am aggressively applying for jobs but no traction yet. Some of my colleagues laid off a year ago (ECM & non-ECM) still struggling to find a job too so don’t see why I can find one anytime soon.
I’m hoping to make a change in my career to do something different. Want to do something that is more modelling / analysis driven rather than relationship driven.
I know it is hard especially given I’ve worked in ECM for 4 years, but is there anything that I can do to better position myself for this mid to long term?
- Networking with people who works in teams that might interest you
- Refresh your knowledge on modelling by taking modelling course / look at models built in your project
- Talk to your colleagues in CS who work in teams that interest you and know what are the skills required and prepare accordingly
- What else…
Would really appreciate any thoughts here. It is obviously very difficult for me and anyone at Cs to be going through this, but I want to be doing the right things now to make a career change (thanks to the Cs situation which made me re-think what I want to do long term)
Are there any certifications I can take and put on CV that are more relevant to buyside except for cfa?

Shouldn't you be aggressively networking/reaching out to folks you know and get a lay of the land that way? Let em know the position in your un...also nyc or london?
interested in knowing location since I’m incoming ECM too
What are you interested in in the long term? Any industry of focus to date?
Could consider corporate development for a couple of years. Depending on the team, you would build your experience much more aggressively (as an associate): industry content, modelling, buy side experience.
Bump
Fellow CS junior here, I feel your pain. Have you considered Investor Relations at a reputable public company / late stage private company? That could be a very transferable role for your skill set, and I have heard of decent work life balance for the comp too.
Any word on whether they are honoring incoming FT/SA offers? And do you think this will hold after the merger closes ?
Incomings all honored
Have you considered Equity Research? It might fit your desire for something more modelling / analysis focused, and you can argue for some read-across with your previous ECM role as (1) you'll have had good exposure to where it goes and where it fits into, for example, an IPO process, and (2) it's still a sellside role so you can argue that it fits a similar of profile to IB (blend of Sales and IB).
If appealling, perhaps worth reaching out to analysts you've come across and see if they're free for a chat to learn more?
The other idea is hedge funds, which would be much more analytical, and where I've less idea on how to transition outside of going back to school.
Yes I also think equity research is a more plausible move. Am networking with relevant colleagues to learn more.
Is taking CFA/CAIA a good use of my time for lateral into equity research given my background?
Because I’m sure at least 3-4 months before I can land any meaningful job after being laid off, so am thinking maybe take some professional qualifications as well.
So networking comes first, and maybe read about my deals on ECM side to know an industry really well as a proof I can do equity research. Then maybe pursue caia or sth to put on CV so my employers know I am not just chilling at home during those future few months when I’m unemployed….
Any thoughts on steps I should take are MUCH appreciated. I’m so lost
