CS/Bio background: i-bank job options?
Hey guys. So, I need some career advice. I'll be a senior next year at a target school (you can probably tell from my username). I have a background in Computer Science and Biology. I have some good biology research, am working at a tech company this summer, and have some good awards and a >3.9 GPA. I've taken some intro Econ courses and done very well. Overall, besides the lack of finance experience, I believe that my resume is strong.
I was wondering what my options are if I want to work at a BB i-bank. I don't have much knowledge about different positions at these banks, so this is where I'm looking for advice. I'm not so much interested in IBD, but more of a tech/biotech market research analyst-type position. I know there are "technology analyst" positions at some of these firms (basically just a standard IT job, as far as I can tell), but I wanted to see if there are any other options.
I'm also wondering if it would be possible to land a job with one of these firms, given the fact that I don't have a Wall Street internship this summer -- and especially given the current job market, which I know is very tough.
Many of you have extensive experience in the industry and are aware of the array of job options available at these firms, so I was hoping you could offer some advice. Thanks so much for your help.
how do you know you want to work in IB if you aren't sure what these positions are or what they entail?
Thanks ibankinglife, that's very helpful.
mlamb93, that's why I posted in the first place. I want to know what's available given my experience, and what these jobs are like. Once I have an idea, I'll do some research and see if the positions are right for me.
I'm simply trying to explore all possible career options, and I thought people with some experience could offer some advice. I just don't know specifically what's out there.
Your situation sounds similar to mine a year ago. Some firms will be quite interested in you for what you describe (research), though you should bear in mind that research is a less important division than it used to be, and I didn't apply to that division, so I can't give you any advice there. I can tell you that bankers realize your bio skillset may be quite similar to what you'll be doing as an analyst (Excel, etc.).
After working hard to get past the gatekeepers and contacting and applying to a huge number of banks, you should get some interviews and offer(s). You sound better positioned than I was, and I landed a gig in IBD (although not in a science-related group, surprisingly). Do expect to work much harder than your buddies at getting this job. But with your GPA and background, which, at least from what I gather, is considered more rigorous than traditional finance-feeder majors, assuming you have the personality and interviewing skills, you should definitely find something.
