Currently operations analyst in Bulge Bracket trying to move to IB in the same firm. Help :)
Hi I’m a first analyst at a bulge bracket firm. In my opinion great culture and possibility to growth. Unfortunately I just got an offer from Ops in trading support. I always admired great bankers and the IB world. Any recommendations for make that move to an IB role in the same bulgur Bracket. Thanks everyone!
Moving from back/middle office to front office is going to be difficult regardless of the firm you're at. It has happened, but those cases are extreme outliers where the person was exceptional at his role + networked significantly with the FO team.
Your best bet would be to excel in your role -> MBA if you want to break into IB.
disagree, just network with MM or smaller ib shops, enter as en entry level analyst or off-cycle, and then grow your career there or lateral to a bigger name. why on earth would you drop 150k for studying to be able to break in.
I mean you can disagree but i'm correct. In 99% of cases, you will not be able to move from BO role to IB FO role.
internally within the same company yes unlikely, but it's def possible if you are okay with moving outside
Alright, here's the kicker. Don't try it at your own bank. Network with FO folks at a different bank.
I know multiple people who got fired - interns and first years - because they were networking with a different department. Yes, life is unfair and I guess it depends on the ego of your manager. But word gets around and they will feel why should they waste resources training you when you're intending to leave at the first chance you get.
So be discreet, network with a different BB/MM/EB, whatever. Get in as an IB analyst.
Not sure what BB you are at. But I know Barclays NY really encourages internal mobility. In your case would try to pass the CFA and try internally move through Barclays. Know someone that did exactly that and transfered into IB, he was middle office though but similar situation.
Disagree. I would suggest the MBA route if he really wants a qualification for IBD. CFA is at least three years of intense studying and will probs be more since basically nobody passes them all on the first. OP only has to go to a semi target to go back to his bank or some other MM to network in and he can get in there. MBA will be more expensive but still the better option especially if going into a high paying job.
TLDR: MBA to IBD is extremely common. CFA to IBD is very uncommon.
