DCM Interview

How should I go about preparing for a DCM interview?

I realize I should be familiar with bonds, but what sort of math should I be expecting? Also, any specific news sources to getting more familiar with the debt markets besides WSJ would be very helpful.

I have definitely looked at previous threads on the topic, and they say to look at CFA Level 1 Fixed Income content, but even that is a substantial amount of information so was hoping I could get some more specific guidance.

Really appreciate it

For the bonds, understand duration and what it means for bonds etc.

I’d recommend looking at current market conditions and whether corporates are looking to issue. The bond market was closed for a while and has opened up again, but still not to the level of investor sentiment that there was before hand.

Have an opinion on what will happen to the market in the short term (1yr).

Also look into loans etc. (unless it is specifically for bonds)

OP here - had a SD with DCM at a top BB. Didn’t get the offer but ended up signing with an EB instead. I’d say you’re definitely on the right track with what you mentioned. Take a look at the economy / interest rate environment and have an opinion on that. Feel comfortable with some of the basic credit concepts / yield curve etc. Also, make sure you have an airtight story of why you’re pursuing DCM specifically. It should never come off like you’re not the best fit for the product group and considering internal mobility etc. Good luck with everything!

Yeah, so really you would be emphasizing a credit background over an equity background. Could also be helpful to share a range of industry interests if the DCM group you’re looking into is generally industry agnostic for juniors. Also, just have a sense of the role that you’re interviewing for eg. DCM would generally be working with investment grade companies so a storyline talking about extensive experience on the distressed side would be incongruous with what you’re interviewing for.
