Based on previous WSO threads, here are some insights on preparing for a career in SSA (Sovereign, Supranational, and Agency) DCM (Debt Capital Markets):

  1. Relevant Internships:

    • Investment Banking Internships: Internships at top investment banks, particularly in their DCM or ECM (Equity Capital Markets) divisions, can provide a strong foundation.
    • Public Sector Internships: Internships with government agencies, central banks, or international financial institutions (like the IMF or World Bank) can be highly relevant.
    • Corporate Finance Internships: Experience in corporate finance roles at large corporations can also be beneficial.
  2. Skills and Experience:

    • Financial Modeling: Proficiency in financial modeling is crucial. Consider taking courses or bootcamps to enhance these skills.
    • Understanding of Sovereign Debt: Knowledge of how sovereign debt markets operate and the specific challenges faced by sovereign issuers is important.
    • Networking: Building a network within the industry can provide valuable insights and opportunities.
  3. Educational Background:

    • Finance or Economics Degrees: A strong academic background in finance, economics, or related fields is often preferred.
    • Certifications: Pursuing certifications like the CFA can also add value to your profile.
  4. Additional Resources:

    • WSO Career Resources: Utilize resources like the WSO Company Database, Financial Modeling Resources, and Mock Interviews with Pros to prepare effectively.
    • Books and Guides: Reading books on investment banking, DCM, and public finance can provide deeper insights.

By focusing on these areas, you can better position yourself for a successful career in SSA DCM teams.

DCM experience in a non-SSA group would obviously be best
Bar that, you could go for rating agencies, or even some public sector / multilateral organisations internships in the Treasury department. Bear in mind that few banks recruit internships directly for SSA, you first have to get the IB or CM summer analyst role. Also depends if you are US based or EMEA
