Disability when applying for IB internships
So I have a disability (moderate stutter) and have a 504 status for it, but I’m scared to say I have a disability in the voluntary self identity section. It’s obviously not a major one, but will still affect my job. I’m scared to click yes that i have a disability (since I can’t list that it’s just a minor one) or to just be 100% and list that I technically have one. This is a pretty niche situation but I’m just wondering what y’all would do
Based on the most helpful WSO content, disclosing a disability during the application process for IB internships is a nuanced decision. Here are some points to consider:
Voluntary Disclosure: Remember that disclosing a disability is entirely voluntary. If you believe your stutter won't significantly impact your job performance or require accommodations, you might choose not to disclose it.
Potential Benefits: Some firms have diversity and inclusion goals and may have specific programs to support candidates with disabilities. Disclosing could potentially make you a more attractive candidate in these cases.
Stigma and Misunderstanding: There's a risk that disclosing a disability could lead to unconscious bias or stigma, even though it shouldn't. This is why some candidates prefer not to disclose unless they need accommodations.
Accommodations: If you feel that you will need some form of accommodation for your stutter, it would be beneficial to disclose your disability. Companies are required to provide reasonable accommodations under the law.
Strategy: You could adopt a strategy where you disclose your disability to some firms and not to others, based on your research into their culture and inclusivity practices. This could give you a better idea of which firms are more receptive.
Preparation: Regardless of your decision on disclosure, ensure that you are well-prepared for interviews. Practice your responses, work on your communication skills, and consider informing the interviewer at the beginning of the conversation about your stutter so they are aware and can adjust their expectations accordingly.
Ultimately, the decision to disclose is personal and should be made based on your comfort level and the research you've done on the firm's culture and policies. Remember, your skills and qualifications are the most important part of your application. Good luck!
