Based on the most helpful WSO content, it appears that the promotion from Analyst to Associate (A2A) does indeed include a sign-on bonus. Specifically, for A2.5/A3's, there have been instances where a $100K "sign-on" bonus was mentioned. This suggests that there is a structured approach to sign-on bonuses for those being promoted from analyst to associate positions within certain firms, particularly at the bulge bracket (BB) banks. However, the exact amount can vary by firm and the specific circumstances of the promotion.

Some banks give some banks don’t. Jefco has a 40k sign on, have heard Moelis has a 60k sign on and obviously Centerview has a 200k sign on.
So let’s say you’re an analyst 3 at CVP. I think they get paid like over 130 base (unsure). And you get a 130 bonus.
In addition to that you’d get paid a 200k sign on for promotion?
All in 3rd year comp at 460???
yes but there is a claw back if you dont stay for all the associate years. not sure if it's prorate after each year
worth it IMO. asc years go by fast
3rd year base is 150
I thought Moelis was 100k
How long is clawback for Moelis A2A sign on bonus?
Gugg is ~60k for A2A signing
Does this replace year end bonus?
I mean all in comp would be massive at that point
No, you still get your standard EOY bonus. This is a separate a2a bonus.
You make more money in the A2A year than your first stub assoc year at places like this.
Gugg is $75k A2A
On top of the stub bonus?
Believe A2A letters go out in December or January (can’t remember tbh). Signing bonus sent shortly after you sign. Promo from ANL3 to ASC0 effective on July 1. ANA3 bonus paid out in August or September and includes backdated ASC base pay to 7/1. ASC0 stub paid in late March. Going through it feels like being thrown money and I’m pretty sure there’s psychology behind it.
My bank has a $50k “forgive-able loan” with a three year cliff vest. Kind of sucks tbh because if you leave or are fired before the three years you have to pay it all back plus interest and taxes. Basically just a way to lock you in.
You’re required to pay it back even if you’re fired? That doesn’t sound right…
I agree. It's grimy to use free boomerang money to coax someone into stay working for you for 3 years.
lol this has gotta be about Baird, and he’s 100% right. They claw everything back - principal, accrued interest (I think which is like 7%) and taxes if you don’t stay 3 years past the time of promote. That includes if you are fired btw. Super restrictive. It’s not really a “bonus” so much as a “here’s a way to ensure you stay because you are now locked into a 3 year PIK loan”
Usually only if you’re fired with cause.
My firm doesn’t pay associate sign ons and we certainly don’t do a2a sign ons. Interesting to know if this is an industry wide practice.
It absolutely is for large mm and up
how would a clawback for a2a possibly look like?
minimum of a 1 year as an associate or its clawed back?
At my bank, if you leave before 6 months you give back 50%, you leave between 6 months and one year you give back 25%. After one year, no clawback. Honestly tho if you leave and go to pe, they ain’t clawing back shit regardless of when it happens.
why would they not claw back anything if moving to pe?
HL is $100K but you have to stay for 3 years after promotion to get it. It’s not even paid and clawed back - have to wait it out.
Lol that's like 65k when discounted to PV
please show discount rate buildup and spread comps plz DR stats, thx
JPM is 40k with 1 year clawback
Truist at $50k A2A signing bonus with 1 year clawback
Wells $40k, one year clawback.
Everyone here is pointing out the clawback periods, and rightfully so. Most analysts are burned out after 2 to 3 years of investment banking. Sticking around for another whole year can be difficult, especially when you see 90% of your peers from your analyst class depart for either PE or less demanding jobs. Many banks are combating this by offering a paid sabbatical (vacation) that is usually 30 days, in addition to the A2A signing bonus.
I have never heard of a PE role that doesn’t crank you as hard. Aboslute joke unless you’re massively downtiering
At Goldman, no A2A bonus and 3 years to get to real post-MBA associate level. Least competitive A2A program on the Street. Thank Mr. DJ
BMO is $40k A2A sign-on with a 1 year clawback similar to the other MM / balance sheet banks above ^ (although not super firm on the vesting unless you’re leaving for a competitor from what I’ve heard)
Anyone know what it is for Citi, Barc, BofA?
Stifel/KBW has a $50k sign on, $20k in cash and $30k in stock that vests in 3 installments over 3 years. I think there's a clawback on the cash portion if you leave before a year
Anyone got info on MS (signing bonus, vaca, clawback, etc)
most BB are $50k from what i've heard - the MM and EBs non CVP are at least $75k.
Believe RBC is still $40K
Citi is $40k A2A sign on with 1 year clawback
Folks - please share your thoughts if appropriate. I am going to come in as a lateral associate (analyst 3 or associate 1, whatever your firm gives titles to this level of experience) at a boutique M&A bank which will require me to relocate in the near future, what kind of sign-on bonus and potential a relocation package that I can expect and that I deem to be reasonable? Thank you all!
25k imo
ya
Thank you all. Will use this figure as a starting point for negotiations.
Good luck and keep us updated! Also depends how big the move is and if you'd be forgoing a known A2A signon you could use that as support
