Do you interview when lateraling internally?

If you wanted to lateral internally do the conversations surrounding this seem to be more logistical or are you entered into a true interview process?

Currently work in IB in one group and want to move to another group (closely related) and I am curious about what that usually looks like from a process perspective.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, the process of internal lateraling does involve an interview. However, it's often described as less technical and more about fit and understanding your reasons for the move.

The process generally starts with expressing your interest to the head of the group you're interested in. It's important to start networking with the group(s) you're interested in as early as possible.

The actual move usually happens after you've been in your current role for at least a year and is often influenced by factors such as bonus season and headcount sizing.

Remember, every bank and office may have different policies and the process can be influenced by various factors, including office politics. It's always a good idea to understand the specific process at your firm.

Hope this helps! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

From my experience: Yes. Usually you have to follow the same process: The job will have to be advertised and external candidates will be interviewed. Which is kind of cruel for them because the Hiring Manager already knows that it will be you. This is done for "transparency" and "equity" purposes.
