Does it really matter where you work location wise during the two year analyst stint in terms of lifestyle?

I know NYC is obviously the most popping place with the best nightlife and social life. However, how much are people able to enjoy that while working 70-80+ hours a week?

Who you know > where you live

If you have friends in Salt Lake City, you will have a much better time than knowing no one in NYC. Also, great point, as an analyst you really just have time to go out Friday and maybe Sat. This is still two days a week though, so you should have time to go out, but you aren’t going to be a master of nightlife in any city while doing IB.

While this is true in general, I think NYC might be an exception in that there's so many transplants, and even those with established friend groups are usually open to meeting new people. If you were to move to somewhere like Houston or Boston though it'll be harder as most people are from a small number of schools or are from the state and have established friend groups that are harder to become apart of.

This seems true and I think I would have thought that in college, but here’s why it’s not true in reality:

Meeting new friends as an adult isn’t easy even if you are super likeable. In general, In order to meet new friends you need to build consistency of seeing someone and interacting with that person. If you are in banking, it’s very hard to build this consistency because you often are unreliable for making plans and are busy with work most the time. You can get drinks and stuff with others in your analyst class, but there’s a weird dynamic and often the talk centers exclusively around work which just is weird.

I’d argue an analyst stint will be way better if a person has friends in the city they are doing the job in prior to the job.
