Does M&A Analyst Intern = Investment Banking Summer Analyst (M&A)

Hi all, I’m an intern at a boutique advisory firm in London. By nature, they work with SMEs and L!MM companies (up to 50mil valuation) so based on their client base they tend to shy away from calling themselves investment bankers, more like M&A or corporate finance advisors like a lot of boutiques in this space do. As such, my official title is M&A Analyst Intern. For CV/LinkedIn purposes, can I label this as Investment Banking Summer Analyst in M&A? Would labelling my title as this be misleading/incorrect? For reference, their work isn’t by definition corporate finance advisory, they truly do act as investment bankers just as large cap advisors do, but with a smaller cap client base. I think as a side note this my question is rooted an insecurity in inadequacy of my CV, as I didn’t have the best recruitment cycle this year for SA roles, so am trying to maximise my chances in the future. Any advice on this appreciated, in particular if there would be any repercussions in future roles upon background checks. Thanks guys.

Based on previous WSO threads, here are some insights regarding your question:

  1. Title Adjustment for Consistency:

    • Many boutique firms, especially those dealing with SMEs and lower middle-market companies, often use titles like "M&A Analyst Intern" or "Corporate Finance Advisor."
    • For CV and LinkedIn purposes, it is common to align your title with industry standards. In larger firms, the title "Investment Banking Summer Analyst" is widely recognized and understood.
  2. Industry Norms:

    • As noted in the thread "Putting Summer Analyst instead of Summer Intern on resume -- Bad Idea?", many professionals recommend using the title "Investment Banking Summer Analyst" to fit the mold of what is commonly seen in bulge bracket and elite boutique firms.
    • This can help in standardizing your experience and making it more relatable to recruiters who are familiar with these titles.
  3. Accuracy and Integrity:

    • While aligning your title with industry norms can be beneficial, it is crucial to ensure that the responsibilities and nature of your work are accurately reflected.
    • Misleading titles can lead to issues during background checks or interviews. It is important to be prepared to explain the nature of your work and how it aligns with the responsibilities of an "Investment Banking Summer Analyst."
  4. Perception and Confidence:

    • Your concern about the adequacy of your CV is understandable. However, focusing on the skills and experiences you gained during your internship can be more impactful than the title itself.
    • Highlighting specific projects, deals, and responsibilities can demonstrate your capabilities and readiness for future roles.

In summary, while it is generally acceptable to use the title "Investment Banking Summer Analyst" for consistency and recognition, ensure that your description of responsibilities and experiences is accurate and truthful. This approach balances industry norms with integrity, helping you present your experience effectively without risking future repercussions.

yes you are an investment banking summer analyst; just make sure you indicate that the firm operates in small-cap, LMM close to the heading

If you’re actually doing advisory work then it should be fine, still misleading though. It would be like someone at Deloitte doing M&A advisory calling themselves an investment banker
