Doing work for other coverage group at BB

I am a SA at a BB this summer. I really want to lateral to a different coverage group at my bank for FT because I find the coverage area way more interesting. I have some coffee chats set up with bankers in that group. Is it weird if I ask them for work since I’m not actually in that group? Will my group get mad? My groups works around 70-80 hours a week and even if I end up working 80-100 this summer with their work I think it’ll be worth it.

My thought process is that by connecting with them + doing work then I may have a higher chance to lateral into their group for FT. Plus, I find their coverage extremely interesting.

Absolutely not. Stick to your coverage, and play it tactically - make your current group think you're in love with their coverage area. Only after you secure the return can you try and play the switcheroo game. Now, you have nothing to gain but everything to lose.

Thank you for the advice! My previous internships it has very much been get involved in anything you want, so it’s good to hear perspective from the people on this forum.
