ECM to Corporate Development feasibility

Hello,

I am a rising freshman at H/W for undergrad and I am doing research on potential groups I can specialize in. I was wondering how hard it would be do go from a hopefully BB ECM stint to Corporate Development... even though there is less modeling exposure, would this exit be possible? Thank you

Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning from a BB ECM (Equity Capital Markets) role to Corporate Development is possible, but it comes with challenges. ECM roles typically involve less financial modeling compared to M&A or coverage groups, which are more aligned with the skill set Corporate Development teams often seek. However, the feasibility of this move depends on several factors:

  1. Skill Set Development: While ECM may not provide extensive modeling exposure, you can proactively build these skills through external resources or training programs. For example, WSO offers financial modeling courses, including DCF, M&A, and LBO modeling, which could help bridge the gap.

  2. Networking: Strong networking is crucial. Building relationships with professionals in Corporate Development and showcasing your interest and transferable skills can significantly improve your chances.

  3. Timing: The timing of your transition matters. Moving earlier in your career, such as after a BB ECM analyst stint, might be easier than later when the lack of modeling experience could become a more significant hurdle.

  4. Personal Preferences: Ultimately, your success in making this transition will depend on your ability to articulate how your ECM experience (e.g., capital raising, market insights) adds value to a Corporate Development role.

If Corporate Development is your long-term goal, you might also consider starting in a group like M&A or coverage, which offers more direct exposure to the skills Corporate Development teams prioritize. Alternatively, supplementing your ECM experience with targeted training and networking can make this exit more achievable.
