ESSEC / Mannheim / WU Wien

Hey everyone!

Quick question on university choices.

Currently, I am an undergraduate student at RSM. I have the opportunity to choose a university to do my semester exchange in for next year. As stated in the title, these are my options: ESSEC, Mannheim and WU Wien.

As I am working my way into IB/PE, I am not so sure about which choice to make so as to boost my chances. I am fluent in both English and German, and, therefore, I do not have a preference for London, nor DACH offices specifically.

Where would it be easier for me to break into IB/PE considering my situation, London or DACH?
Moreover, which university choice do you reckon I make?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to consider:

  1. Breaking into IB/PE: London vs. DACH

    • London: The financial hub of Europe, offering a broader range of opportunities in IB and PE. Networking and recruitment processes are highly competitive but more diverse in terms of nationality and background.
    • DACH (Germany, Austria, Switzerland): Strong for IB/PE, especially for German-speaking candidates. The market is smaller but offers a more focused and relationship-driven recruitment process. Your fluency in German gives you a significant edge here.
  2. University Choices

    • ESSEC: Highly regarded for finance and business, with strong ties to the French market and a growing reputation in London. It could be a good choice if you're targeting London or even Paris.
    • Mannheim: Known as one of the top business schools in Germany, it has excellent connections in the DACH region. If you're leaning towards DACH offices, Mannheim is a strong contender.
    • WU Wien (Vienna University of Economics and Business): While respected, it doesn't carry the same weight in IB/PE recruitment as ESSEC or Mannheim. It might be a better fit if you're interested in Austria or Central/Eastern Europe.
  3. Recommendation

    • If you're targeting London, ESSEC would likely provide the best exposure and network.
    • If you're targeting DACH, Mannheim is the clear winner due to its strong regional reputation and alumni network.
    • WU Wien would be a distant third unless you have a specific interest in Austria or Central Europe.

Given your fluency in both English and German, you have the flexibility to choose either London or DACH. However, your decision should align with where you see yourself building a long-term career. If undecided, Mannheim might offer a balanced option, as it keeps the door open for both DACH and London opportunities.
