Etiquette on asking for referral / pushing application to HR

*for context, UK-based, where coffee chat -> interview pipeline isn't as common

When having coffee chats with bankers, do you feel comfortable asking for a referral / asking them to push your profile to HR?

If so:
(1) how would you do it? do you ask outright?
(2) is this appropriate with levels of seniority, i.e. would you ask an MD this or only Analysts?

Thanks!

When it comes to asking for referrals or requesting someone to push your application to HR, especially in the UK where the coffee chat-to-interview pipeline isn't as common, here’s what you need to know based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Is it appropriate to ask for a referral?

    • Yes, but timing and approach are critical. You should only ask for a referral if you've built a genuine connection during the conversation. Jumping straight to a referral request without establishing rapport can come across as transactional and off-putting.
  2. How to ask for a referral?

    • Subtle and appreciative approach: Instead of outright asking, frame it as seeking advice. For example:
      • "I really appreciate your insights about [firm/industry]. Do you think there’s anyone else I should speak to who might offer additional perspectives?"
      • If the conversation has gone well, you can add: "If you think my background aligns, would you feel comfortable passing my profile along to HR or someone in the team?"
    • Follow-up email: After the chat, send a thank-you email and subtly include the referral request. For instance:
      • "Thank you again for taking the time to speak with me. I found your advice on [specific topic] incredibly helpful. If you think my background aligns with opportunities at Firm, I’d be grateful if you could share my profile with HR or let me know the best way to proceed."
  3. Who to ask?

    • Analysts and Associates: These are typically the best people to approach for referrals. They are closer to the recruiting process and more likely to understand the nuances of your application.
    • VPs and MDs: Be cautious here. While they have influence, they are often busier and less involved in junior hiring. If you’ve had a strong conversation with a senior banker and they seem open, you can politely ask, but don’t push.
  4. Key tips for success:

    • Build rapport first: Focus on making a good impression during the chat. If they like you and see potential, they may offer to help without you needing to ask.
    • Be respectful of their time: Keep your request concise and professional.
    • Don’t overdo it: Avoid asking for referrals from every single person you meet. Be selective and strategic.

Remember, the goal is to make the interaction feel natural and mutually beneficial. People are more likely to help if they feel a genuine connection and see you as someone who adds value.
