Experence with 2nd/3rd tier Middle Market Interviews
For those of you that have had experience with smaller / very regional boutiques for analyst/associate positions, could you please share the extent to which technical knowledge is tested.
I am positive that this would vary in a case by case basis, but just looking to see if they are usually less stringent on the modeling knowledge necessary.
My experience with MM interviews has been that they are much more focused on behavioral and fit than BBs and elite boutiques. I also had a finance internship last summer and am in a business program (vs. liberal arts background) so I think questions about my experience last summer may have replaced technical questions in my case. YMMV, however.
My firm has ~60 total bankers, and the most "technical" questions I got during analyst interviews were:
What are the branches of ECM? What are the main ways to value a company?
Both with no follow-ups.
Almost every interview was: why banking? why a small firm over a BB? thoughts on long hours?
very few technicals
