FIG Placement/Exit Opps ?

Hey guys,

I just want to get some insights about the exit opps after being an analyst at GS FIG team ?

I am an incoming first year analyst, final year student at a top European Business School, think LBS, HEC, Imperial, and I am long term interested in the hedge fund space (L/S) / special sits / large cap buyout.

I also got an offer at JP Tech but decided on GS, I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the exit opportunities and how to best enter the industries outlined above?

Thanks,

The FIG Guy

Do you mean that the whole FIG team is now going to be based in Paris ?

Incorrect, only parts of the french coverage within FIG. Rest will be in London

Navigating the exit opportunities after a stint in the GS FIG team can be an exciting journey, especially with your long-term interests in the hedge fund space, special situations, and large-cap buyouts. The Financial Institutions Group (FIG) at Goldman Sachs is renowned for its analytical rigor and depth of industry knowledge, which can be a significant advantage as you explore your next steps.

Here's how your experience in GS FIG can position you for success in your targeted fields:

  1. Hedge Funds (Long/Short) / Special Situations: Your FIG background will have equipped you with a deep understanding of financial institutions, a sector that is often a significant component of hedge fund portfolios. This sector-specific expertise can be a unique selling point when applying to hedge funds, especially those with a focus on financial services or that appreciate deep sectoral knowledge for special situations investing. Highlight your analytical skills, understanding of regulatory impacts on valuations, and any experience with complex financial instruments.

  2. Large Cap Buyouts: While FIG is a niche sector, the skills you develop in analyzing and valuing financial institutions are highly transferable. Large-cap PE firms, although sector-agnostic, value the analytical rigor and deal experience that analysts from top investment banks bring. Your challenge will be to demonstrate your adaptability and how your sector-specific skills can be applied to a broader range of industries. Networking with alumni from your business school who are in PE and leveraging the GS network can provide insights and opportunities in this space.

  3. Networking and Skill Development: To best position yourself for these industries, focus on building a robust network within your areas of interest. Attend industry conferences, connect with alumni in your target sectors, and seek mentorship within GS. Additionally, consider developing complementary skills that are valued in your target fields, such as proficiency in financial modeling specific to hedge funds or understanding the operational aspects relevant to PE buyouts.

  4. Leverage GS Resources: Goldman Sachs has a vast array of resources and an extensive network. Express your career interests to mentors and HR to potentially get staffed on projects or deals that align with your interests. GS's internal mobility program can also offer opportunities to gain exposure to different areas that might align more closely with your long-term goals.

  5. JP Tech Offer Consideration: While you've chosen GS FIG over JP Tech, it's worth noting that tech banking also offers robust exit opportunities, particularly into growth equity and venture capital, which could intersect with your interest in special situations and large-cap buyouts. Keep an open mind about the tech sector, as fintech is a growing area within both the hedge fund and PE spaces.

In summary, your FIG experience at GS can serve as a strong foundation for your career aspirations. It's about leveraging what you learn, the networks you build, and the brand on your resume to pivot into the hedge fund or PE space. Focus on developing a narrative that connects your FIG experience with the skills and insights valued in your target fields.
