Fired for Performance Issues. What now?

I was recently let go from work due to performance issues. Given a few months to transition out. I reached the level of Director at the beginning of the year while working in corporate development at a tech firm. This is the first time I’ve ever been fired.

How do I best position myself for future interviews given the circumstances?

Was it genuinely for performance reasons or did you get laid off? If you reached Director it seems a little weird that you could succeed in corp dev for that long and then suddenly blow up, but I guess it does happen.

Maybe just tell places that the team started downsizing (?) - not sure, but something to think about. I would not explicitly say that you got fired for performance reasons but I think it depends what it is.

I was at the company for over a decade but in a different function for most of the time I was employed.

I recently had the opportunity to move into a newer function that I had wanted to be in, but according to my new manager, I struggled to meet expectations and did not have the judgement needed to be in the seat I was in, and he ended up giving the my seat to another staff that was more junior. I’ve been desperately trying to apply to new roles but I’m barely even getting interviews.

Don't overthink it. People get laid off, pushed out, and fired all the time and they find new jobs. Just keep applying and learn from your mistakes in your next role.
