Flexing (too much) on Linkedin
I wasn't aware of this flexing till I saw the first one and know I just can't take it anymore.
What do you think about the people that puts in his position its Former position as ex-"insert BB name", in my opinion it looks like they are not proud enough about its currents jobs.
I have seen it as well with ex-MBB, I really can't stand it, and moreover most of the times they have only spent there like 1y.
What are your thoughts guys? Do you think it might be positive to network?
I don't like it either.. you get people that did BO at JPM that have "Ex-JPM Investment Bank" in their title.
But, they're not fooling anyone. While to some it may seem impressive, to those in the know, they just look silly.
That’s what I literally think
it reeks insecurity and is super lame. the only time this is remotely acceptable is if its a Rhodes or Schwarzman scholar. Because people want to see that.
I also hate seeing Harvard in someone's title, when it's the extension school or EMBA program. Like, you are not fooling anyone.
You mean to tell me the certificate in leadership I earned for sitting in a few hours of zoom with a Harvard professor doesn't count as a Harvard education? Blasphemy
The real education is the friends you made along the way.
I lol'd at your post but there are literally close to a few hundred people who do this. Nuts.
I don't think anyone cares about Schwarzman Scholars lol
Personally, I find it helpful and think that there's nothing wrong with it as long as their role was accurate. Since I scroll through LinkedIn pretty quickly and don't have time to click on everyone's profile, it's useful to see a person's previous companies in their headline because it sparks my interest in reaching out to them, and they're usually super eager to help. I don't think that everyone is necessarily "trying to flex" because some people may just want to provide some context for their background and make it easier for other people to find them. I think that this is more accepted in tech, and it hasn't been as common in finance. The "Ex-" term does sound strange though, so I wish that there was a better-sounding term for that.
Great thoughts, I think is the positive side of it that Headline, if actually they are trying to help and not flex.
I’ll give it that thought next time I see that.
However, when you search on LinkedIn p.e. “ Investment Banking Analyst, Goldman Sachs” They appear to you not only the actual, but also the former analysts performing that role.
I spoke with a mentor of mine who explained that recruiters have these automatic screening criteria they run on LinkedIn to find candidates/young professionals. One thing these firms look for is work experience at known firms. So the situation ends up being: you work at a firm, it shows up in your experiences, but to make sure it's picked up by the search function, you include the firm name in your headline as well. Some firms recruit or target specific BB shops or MBBs to look for individuals looking to exit into whatever field (restructuring, C-suite industry, PM at FAANG, etc.).
So really, it's just their way of trying to get picked up in the recruitment search from headhunters/senior recruiters for potential exits.
I think it’s helpful to know as knowing where someone came from can make it easier to understand them
That’s for sure, but you can see their background when you enter the profile.
The headline normally goes for your actual role or discipline
Flexing on LinkedIn is corny but caring about what other people have on their page is even cornier. Don’t be an insecure dork; worry about yourself only.
I've seen far more people do it in tech. Stuff like "Ex-SWEgoogle but they'll also list every F500 company they've worked at lol
Yeah there’s Literally 21 year olds with better resume than Steve Jobs.
10+ Spring Weeks
20+ courses
Last week we interviewed a kind for summer intern that said that he was doing IB internship, while he was doing Equity research at a boutique and studying at the same time.
Kids just don’t know we’re is the limit of flexing...
It's even more common tech lmao
Why is it so fuckin hard to edit a comment on this damn app
because you aren't ex-MBB, ex-KKR, ex-Wharton EMBA
