Follow Up After Interview

Hey guys,

Just had an interview last friday (I met 5 people who gave me cards, of 6). Should I follow up with a thank you note? I would find it weird to follow up with only 1 person, but desperate if I followed up with everyone....

Thanks!

You always send a thank you e-mail to follow up. If someone is giving you his/her time and attention, you need to show appreciation. I have definitely dinged / thought a lot less of people who did not follow up with me. It is one of those things that I often remember and use to formulate opinions of students...

Since this is a formal interview, the decision probably has already been made so there is no practical benefit to following up. Nonetheless, you should still do it out of courtesy.

My rule of thumb is to send a thank you e-mail the day after an informational interview or informal chat (even if it is with a friend or a fellow student). However, I send a "Thank you" e-mail immediately after a formal interview. Literally the sooner the better since decisions are often made immediately after the superday wraps up.

Ok, thanks.

I just sent one, probably no reason at this point. I did like the people I met, and being a sophomore if I don't get this now, I might get it next year. Also, it seems this division took like 3 weeks to give offers last year. Why?

Yes, I sent thank you notes to all of my first round interviewers and to all of my super-day interviewers. It is best to try an include a specific snippet that you discussed or covered in your interview so that they can put a face to your name. Also, avoid using the same "cookie cutter" thank you email to every interviewer.

Best of luck!

I have tried to get into the habit of both emailing a thank you note and overnighting a more formal letter directly to the company (send both on same day). More expensive but I like to think this ensures your interest in the job and should help you standout from other monkies.
