Follow-up Questions
Hi Monkeys,
I've recently had two interviews with different firms and I'm just wondering if I should be sending follow-ups after I've sent some thank you emails.
Firm 1: MM IB S&T- I interviewed(Nov 15th) with the managing director of the desk and the second director below him. They seemed to like me and the second director went to my school so we had a lot in common. Very conversational interview. They said they would let me know where they were in the process as they were trying to get someone on the desk by the 1st of the year. The recruiter emailed me back about a week after the interview asking for feedback and she said she would provide me with any feedback she received. Did I get dinged? Should I contact her or either of the two MDs?
Firm 2: High freq trading firm- I interviewed (last Thu) with the principal who seemed very interested in my background. Went well overall and he told me there would be a 2nd round interview in a couple of weeks after they have interviewed the other candidates. This role was pretty unique as I would be the only one at the firm not from a CS background. I would be generating algorithm ideas related to market structure and monitoring the current models. I'm just wondering if I should email the principal back next week or possibly the following week(assuming I don't hear anything) or wait until he contacts me?
Thanks in advance for the input!
Yeah, absolutely follow up with both of them. Always follow up after an interview thanking the interviewers for their time/consideration, reiterating your interest in the firm and why you think you'd be a good fit given some of the conversations you had in the interview. If they don't hear back from you, they assume you aren't that interested, as everyone else they interviewed likely followed up with them right after the interview and then on a weekly pr bi-weekly basis until they got a decision.
For the second firm, if you feel like there's a skill mismatch, you can potentially recognize that in your e-mail and state that you've already had ___ experience learning these computer languages and feel competent enough to learn whatever. Of course, they may be looking for someone who won't face such a steep learning curve, but if you prove that you want it more than anyone they may give you a shot.
Did you read my post? I already followed up with a thank you email right after the interview, stating my strong interest for the roles. I was asking whether or not to email the recruiter or the MDs back.
For the second, the role itself was specifically designated for a non-CS background, so it wouldn't really matter if I didn't have any CS skills.
