Freshman Summer Internship
Hi,
I'm a current freshman at a non-target (Patriot League). I've been browsing the sub and have received conflicting answers regarding internships during freshman summer.
On one hand, some people argue that an internship during this summer is not that important and this time would be better spent relaxing and doing something fun before entering the rat race.
However, other people also say that relevant work experience is vital because of early recruiting timelines. Does anyone have any advice regarding this topic?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's the deal with freshman summer internships:
Not Crucial, But Valuable: While a freshman summer internship isn't a make-or-break factor for your future in investment banking, having some relevant experience can give you a head start. It signals early interest in finance and helps build your resume for sophomore summer recruiting, which is far more critical.
Aim Small, Build Experience: You don't need a prestigious internship at this stage. Focus on gaining basic exposure to finance. Reach out to local boutique investment banks, private equity firms, or even startups. Even unpaid internships or short-term projects can add value.
Networking Opportunity: Use this time to start building relationships. Networking early can open doors for sophomore and junior year opportunities. Reach out to alumni, attend events, and connect with professionals in the industry.
Balance Fun and Preparation: It's okay to relax and enjoy your summer, but don't waste the opportunity to do something productive. Even if you can't land a formal internship, consider taking finance-related courses, joining a club, or working on a personal project that demonstrates your interest in the field.
Early Recruiting Timelines: With recruiting timelines accelerating, having any finance-related experience on your resume can help you stand out when sophomore summer recruiting begins. Banks are increasingly scrutinizing freshman summer activities due to the earlier processes.
In summary, while it's not mandatory to have a freshman summer internship, doing something finance-related (even small) can set you up for success. If you can't secure an internship, focus on networking and skill-building to prepare for the more critical sophomore summer recruiting.
