Good or No Good?

Hi all,

So just got email from a small bank saying that they are willing to take me on as an intern for this summer. Just one thing though: it is remote, which makes me wonder how much actual experience I will get. Should I take this offer, or keep this option open and wait until a better one comes (where I can actually have hands on experience in the office)?

Thanks.

If you don't have anything else lined up there's no reason not to take it. I wouldn't wait too long to accept/deny the offer. The bank will think it's strange you applied, interviewed, got the position, and then didn't give them an answer.

Take it. If something that much better comes along the bank will understand if you have to leave. If you're not getting as much experience as you'd like there when you start (which you probably won't), keep networking and honing your modeling skills for next summer so you can get something better.

Nowhere in the application process will you have to indicate that the internship was remote. You also won't get asked about whether it was remote or not during the interview process. I had a similar situation a long time ago and my manager basically told me if anyone asked him, he would say I interned at the office.

Like others have said though, accept and then see what other options you have. I'm sure you're not the only one who has asked them to intern like this, considering how competitive banking is becoming.

You have a unique opportunity working as a remote intern for a small bank. You could become their go-to guy, and the fact that you aren't even in the office physically hedges your risk that they just wouldn't like you. You could also have a much bigger impact and use it to build your resume for applying to bigger banks. Never discount the fact you may really like the work and see yourself worked into their main office. Keep an open mind.
