Graduating as an analyst in NY despite interning outside the US?

Hi there,

A friend of mine completed a summer internship in the IBD of a BB. They were given a return offer and were noted as being the top performing summer intern at the firm.

However, they completed the internship outside of the US and want to transfer to the NY office as a grad analyst.

Wanted to ask WSO about whether this is feasible? I’ve had a few people at my firm transfer to the US office, but as 2nd/3rd year associates, rather than 1st year analysts.

If this feasible, how would the above work?

Hey there,

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it's definitely feasible for your friend to transfer to the NY office as a grad analyst, even if they completed their internship outside of the US. It's not unheard of for people to make such moves, although it's more common at the associate level as you've noted.

The process would likely involve a few steps:

  1. Your friend should first express their interest in transferring to the NY office to their current manager or HR representative. It's important to communicate this desire early and clearly.

  2. They may need to go through some form of internal interview process, although this can vary by firm. Some might require a formal process, while others might just have a few informal conversations.

  3. If approved, the firm would then handle the logistics of the transfer, including any necessary visa arrangements.

Remember, every firm has its own policies and procedures, so it's crucial for your friend to have a discussion with their manager or HR to understand the specific process at their firm. Good luck to your friend!

It's possible but not likely. Internships ended ~2 months ago and presumably they signed their return offer? If so, definitely cannot move at that point. This type of thing has to be done before you sign the return.

Many banks will happily move you at the 1 year mark of FT, maybe 2 years for some banks, but interns are more difficult. US office -> US office is doable but still a challenge, int'l to US you better have a good reason and no visa issues. If you have some extremely compelling reason (sick parent in US you need to be close to) they may work with you. "I'd rather be in NY" you will probably have to wait at least a year.

Not sure if you're asking "how did this happen?" or "should my friend try this?" if the answer is the latter I would say no.

Since there is still almost 1 year before the start date, couldn’t they reach out to HR sometime during the year? If they are based in the US and American it should be possible, agree that it would be a lot more difficult for someone who has no ties to the US and just wants to randomly go there
