Help Incoming Intern

Hi all incoming M&A Summer analyst at an EB in London here.

What do I need to do now to secure the FT offer, when competing against the European interns with 5x as much experience?

Little bit worried I’m going to get smoked by these guys, so wondering what I should be doing now to bring me up to scratch (modelling/powerpoint ect…)

Would be grateful to hear from literally anyone.

To secure a full-time offer as an M&A Summer Analyst at an elite boutique (EB) in London, especially when competing against highly experienced European interns, here’s what you should focus on:

1. Technical Skills Mastery

  • Financial Modeling: Brush up on M&A, DCF, LBO, and Comps modeling. Use resources like WSO’s financial modeling templates and courses to practice.
  • Excel Proficiency: Learn shortcuts, advanced formulas, and formatting to ensure efficiency.
  • PowerPoint Skills: Master creating clean, professional slides. Focus on attention to detail and formatting consistency.

2. Understand the M&A Process

  • Familiarize yourself with the end-to-end M&A process, including deal sourcing, valuation, due diligence, and closing.
  • Review case studies or past deals to understand how transactions are structured and executed.

3. Behavioral Preparation

  • Be ready to articulate your story, motivations, and why you’re a good fit for the team.
  • Practice answering common behavioral questions and prepare examples of teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving.

4. Networking and Team Dynamics

  • Build strong relationships with your team. Show enthusiasm, ask thoughtful questions, and be proactive in seeking feedback.
  • Observe and adapt to the team’s culture and work style.

5. Work Ethic and Attitude

  • Be reliable, detail-oriented, and willing to go the extra mile. Your attitude and work ethic can set you apart from others.
  • Stay calm under pressure and demonstrate resilience during long hours.

6. Leverage Resources

  • Use WSO’s Investment Banking Interview Prep and other resources to refine your technical and behavioral skills.
  • Seek mentorship or advice from alumni or professionals in your network who have been through similar internships.

7. Stay Updated

  • Keep up with market trends, major deals, and industry news. This will help you contribute meaningfully to discussions and tasks.

By focusing on these areas, you can level the playing field and position yourself as a strong candidate for a full-time offer. Remember, it’s not just about technical skills but also how well you integrate into the team and demonstrate your potential. Good luck!

Happy to chat but the expectation is you learn on the job. Maintain a great attitude, ask for industry reports for the industries you are working on, being a yes person. Don’t ask questions you can figure out but also don’t waste time doing things. Balancing act
