Help with Interview Process

Hi all,

I was recently interviewing for a top choice investment banking team. I had two screeners (one MD and one VP) before moving onto the technical portion. The technical interview was delayed by two additional weeks, but ultimately it went well. I got 6/7 questions right (and the one that was incorrect was highly debatable). The interviewer commented that I finished up the technicals more quickly than other interviewers.  He mentioned that given the current need, he'd be very excited if he was in my shoes. I affirmed my excitement to the best of my ability (I do get deer-in-headlights syndrome over zoom at times) and in my follow up thank you email to him.

A couple weeks passed without any updates. I finally called the original MD I networked with, and he told me that the interviewer said that I failed the technical portion. I stated that the interviewer verbatim told me that I performed well on the technicals, so I was confused. The MD told me to follow up with him (cc'ing the MD) to ask for feedback. Immediately after I did this, HR replied to me saying that I would not move forward.

I am confused about what happened here. Is this worth following up again at some point? I think there was a mistake or the interviewer just didn't like me apparently. I could use some advice on how to handle. I am very bummed and really not looking forward to starting up the recruiting process again, this process alone took me about 2 months.

Thanks so much for any advice.
