HireVue Is NOT Paradise

I have a deep disdain for HireVue interviews. I was emailed for a back office internship and the recruiter asked me to start/finish the hirevue interview and I emailed her back saying that I'd rather do a live zoom interview. I already accepted an offer elsewhere; right now I'm interviewing out of pure love for the game (more practice never hurts). Anyway, I wonder what the recruiter will say, I honestly don't care since I have nothing to lose.

Anyway who else hates hirevue? I think it's a way for HR to laugh at more clueless and desperate undergrads making fools of themselves.

I think HireVue's are brilliant. It allows students to convey confidence, strong soft skills and an additional opportunity to convey interests in the line of business they're applying for. 99% of applicants will put down "a strong interest of capital markets" but when asked a question around current affairs with 30 seconds of prep, there's no room for hiding. It's also extremely effective in filtering the best students for an AC / Superday

I find it's usually extremely awkward individuals who despise HV's because, like I said, there's nowhere to hide.

So if you got hit with the same question with the same level of prep, you're implying there is room to hide during a virtual interview/zoom? I would actually argue the opposite. Hirevues actually give time to BS during that prep time by using chatgpt, google, a friend etc. When you're staring at a real human in live time you can't really BS IMO.

You’re missing the entire argument. I’m not arguing that HV’s should replace in-person interviews at all if you read that again.

What OP has suggested make’s absolutely zero sense. They want HV’s replaced by in-person interviews which - if you have any idea how recruitment at BB works - isn’t possible due to the sheer scale of applications received.

HV’s are another layer to a CV and that only. It’s sole purpose is to act as another filtration measure and it’s incredibly inferior to an interview, which is why they can’t be compared like for like which is what OP has done.

The other thing, with a real interviewer, if you get a question, you can politely say you don’t know or try to work out the answer and the interviewer will help you along or move on with the interview (without dinging you). Hirevues don’t really allow that

In addition as a candidate, I hated them because it felt like I was talking to a wall. I didn’t get any body language to get a grasp on how they were receiving a response.

They felt like a chance to get dinged without a chance to actually show much knowledge (I once got dinged from a hirevue process where I was asked ‘what is EBITDA’…I had multiple banking internships at this point)

In that case it would make sense for most HV's to be open-ended, personal and soft-skilled questions...which in 99% of cases they are. I'm sorry but if you need your interviewer to hold your hand because struggling to answer "Why MS?", "Tell me about a time you faced adversity" or "Tell me about a group project you worked on" then you really don't deserve the time of day to be sat infront of a busy employee 1:1.

I'd rather have a face to face (or live) interaction. I feel as though HV feels forced and inorganic. In HV you have 30 seconds to prep, in a live interview you have to answer the question on the spot. While doing HV interviews, people, including myself, want to find the best way to articulate thoughts and experiences in a way that conveys said confidence/competence and I think HV is not the best way to do that. There are so many intangibles that are lost in translation through pre recorded video interviews, to the point where I'd rather answer on the spot.

Two years ago I was working my ass off doing insulation and stringing jobs together to build a resume. I think it's safe to say even back office would be a win for me. Still doesn't change the fact that I hate hirevue.

Everyone would rather do face to face interviews but think about how inefficient it would be to do this with every applicant.

For example: GS had like ~2500 applicants for their IB program last year, you can eliminate 50-70% of applicants just based on bad hireview answers that clearly shows they did no preparation.

I agree with an above commenter, hireview is a great way to expose those people who are bs’ing on their resumes, LinkedIn or cover letters. “Strong financial analysis background” but can’t tell you the difference between a 10K and 10Q lol

The sheer amount of time and effort it takes to conduct just one single interview is significantly more than what we believe as these are conducted by professionals with loaded schedules and not HR.

HV’s are just an additional filtration system at the first stage and that is all.

Not to give them any ideas, but at least first round interviews arent (yet) outsourced to filipino/indian call center people reading the questions off a script

>“please be apprised sir, we have many candidates who did the needful and have decided to revert back to other applicants at this time”

We're moving in that direction - I have interviewed with some firms that do this. Some Indian call centre person who was reading out questions from a prepared list and typing my responses into a spreadsheet. In between each response I had to wait 15-20 seconds and listen to them typing on their keyboard.

Stop asking the same old questions. How about hiring people based on their personality and if you genuinely like them / if you feel they’re a good person. Imo no technical qualifications and the interview should be if you can hold a conversation for 30 mins.
