How can an established bank open their own Investment Banking practice?
Is there any guide, post or report which talks about how an established bank, in EMEA region or anywhere, can expand its operations into investment banking? Would love to get it for a study I am doing.
Not EMEA but Wells Fargo is a good example of a bank expanding into IB practice (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-01-04/wells-fargo-to-expan…)
I know of an associate who went off to start his own firm. Think the firm is called Conor Frishmeyer Advisory. The founder was a bottom bucket analyst/associate at Lincoln that got phased out somehow. Seems to be hustling though and I'm curious to see where the firm ends up (probably in the dumpster bc the founder is like 25)
This is really just a build or buy question. If the bank is fairly large, then starting capital markets operations is fairly easy. Advisory operations are much more difficult because mandates are harder to win. Capital markets transactions are easier to win if you are part of the existing bank group.
