How can I get back into Investment Banking?

Hi All,

Really looking for advice here. For my background, I attended a non target (class of 2023), and during my time in undergrad, I had 7 different internships (business development, FP&A, PE search fund, and 4 investment banking, at various boutiques). Economy was pretty bad once I came out of undergrad and none of my internships wanted to extend a full time offer due to uncertainties and many investment banks were undergoing RIF’s, so I never got a full time offer afterwards (basically got bent over and fucked). I joined an extremely small real estate investment bank right after but it was a terrible gig since the comp was EXTREMELY below street (lived paycheck to paycheck), and the firm never closed a deal in their existence despite telling me they close 3-5 a year during my interview process (their website lied about the deals they’ve closed). It was a shitshow and I had to get out, so I switched to wealth management consulting. But my role is basically a glorified data entry gig. I’m taking some time to study for my CFA just because my firm offers that for free, and so I don’t lose my mind doing mind-numbing data entry work. Don’t want to feel like everything I had to grind for was for nothing. Does anybody have any advice for getting back into IB? I know the MBA to associate route could be an option, but I was wondering if I could possibly go back without an MBA considering the background I had, but definitely open to it. Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some detailed steps and advice to help you get back into Investment Banking (IB):

1. Leverage Your Network

  • Reconnect with Past Contacts: Reach out to your previous internship supervisors and colleagues. They can provide valuable references or even alert you to openings.
  • Expand Your Network: Attend industry events, join finance-related groups on LinkedIn, and participate in WSO forums to meet professionals in the field.

2. Enhance Your Skill Set

  • CFA Certification: Continue studying for your CFA. It’s a respected credential that can make your resume stand out.
  • Financial Modeling Courses: Consider taking advanced financial modeling courses. WSO offers a variety of courses that can help you sharpen your skills.

3. Tailor Your Resume and Cover Letter

  • Highlight Relevant Experience: Emphasize your investment banking internships and any relevant projects or achievements.
  • Quantify Your Achievements: Use specific numbers to demonstrate your impact (e.g., "Assisted in the valuation of 5 companies, resulting in a 20% increase in client acquisition").

4. Consider Different Entry Points

  • Lateral Moves: Look for lateral positions in smaller firms or boutiques where your experience might be more valued.
  • Back Office to Front Office: Sometimes starting in a back office role can provide a pathway to a front office position.

5. Prepare for Interviews

  • Mock Interviews: Practice with mock interviews to refine your responses and improve your confidence. WSO offers mock interview services that can be very helpful.
  • Technical and Behavioral Questions: Be prepared to answer both technical questions related to finance and behavioral questions that assess your fit for the firm.

6. Stay Informed and Updated

  • Industry Trends: Keep up with the latest trends and news in investment banking. This will help you in interviews and networking conversations.
  • WSO Resources: Utilize WSO’s resources like the Investment Banking Interview Prep and Financial Modeling Resources to stay sharp.

7. Consider the MBA Route

  • Top MBA Programs: If you decide to pursue an MBA, aim for top programs that have strong finance and investment banking placements.
  • Networking During MBA: Use the MBA program to network extensively and secure internships that can lead to full-time offers.

Additional Tips:

  • Persistence: The job market can be tough, but persistence is key. Keep applying and networking.
  • Positive Attitude: Maintain a positive attitude and be open to different opportunities that can eventually lead you back to IB.

By following these steps and utilizing the resources available on WSO, you can improve your chances of getting back into investment banking. Good luck!
