5 minutes walk, best move i ever did, means i can pull an extra hour at work or leave at the same time for some extra living. Assuming you work 10 hour days, sleep for 8 you have 6 hours to yourself a day. Most people's travel time will be between 1-2 hours round trip. knocking their available time to live to 4-5, compared to my 6. So I have 20-25% extra life during the week compared to living elsewhere, not accounting for not having to pay for any transport costs, (which are are from your taxed income so gross them up by 50% for their pre tax worth).
Best decision I ever made. (and i used to drive an hour each way to work). No traffic, no deicing the car, no petrol, no insurance/service surprises, and way healthier.
In NYC, commutes are not nearly as long as 30 mins to 1 hour one way unless you're living in Brooklyn. For most people it's usually 15 mins one way, which is not that bad.
In NYC it oughtn't ever be more than 20 minutes away unless you have significantly shorter hours than average.
Some of the analysts I met in London lived a 15-20 minutes away, which sucks considering the hours they pull.
When I was in banking: 5-10 min drive, depending on lights.
Now in PE: 15-40 minute drive, depending on traffic and whether or not we're getting hit by these stupid weekly blizzards.
piece of advice: live as close as possible. If not to the office than at least as close as possible to a tube stop. This is for both IBD and S&T. Waking up at 5 am you will be thankful for the extra 10 mins in the mornings.
20 minute walk or 5 minute ($8) cab depending on how much sleep I've gotten
8 minute walk. can't tell you how money it is to live close to work in IB.
4 minute walk all underground. Anyone heard of the PATH in Toronto? It's fucking awesome. My condo, office, grocery store, bank, mall, theatre are all connected, so I never need to go outside in the winter.
Not nearly as depressing as having to walk outside when it's cold as shit...
Path is awesome - I just could never stand the smell when I lived there so i walked above ground.
Work is 10 min walk away now. My goal is never to have to commute ever again.
Back in banking: about a 10 minute walk. Now in PE: about a 5-15 minute drive, depending on traffic.
I'm not in IB but I live about 11,000 inches from my office, give or take. Note: this does not including the elevator ride to the 25th floor of my building.
I'm being serious.
Regards
22 miles or about 45 minutes considering traffic.
You in Katy or something?
Williamsburg to Midtown... 20 minutes...
