How many of you accepted an offer from the place you interned
I think this would be an interesting discussion.
Let's arbitrarily split the BB into two parts: 1) MS, GS, Lehman, UBS, Top Boutiques 2) Citi, DB, BS, ML, JPM, BoA, CS etc and throw in the mid-markets: Wachovia, HLHZ, Piper J, Stifel N. etc.
In which of the three groups did you do an internship? Did you get an offer? IF yes, did you accept it without interviewing anywhere else, or did you shop around but decided to come back? Why did you shop around first? If you switched banks, did you lateral up, or did you stay at the same level? If you stayed at the same level, why didn't you just stay?
I interned at a bank at group 2 from the BB, received an offer and didn't interview anywhere else. There were several reasons why I chose not to interview. Firstly, I really liked my bank and I think that anything besides GS, MS, and the top boutiques gives you almost identical exit opps. So, it didn't really matter to me whether I worked for ML, JPM, DB, etc. They all seem equally well-positioned, or at least that's the impression I got. Secondly, I didn't feel like dealing with the stress of interviewing again. I had done that before for internship and the constant research, flying, and prepping had hurt my grades and I just didn't feel like doing all that again.
So what are your stories?
Interned at group 1 and accepted at a different group 1.
Interned in a group 1 firm and accepted their FT offer. Didn't interview anywhere else because I work in a regional office and my firm was one of top 2 in that office.
interned in group one got an offer to return, interviewed in group 2 and took offer in group 2
Interned in Group 2(even though I dont think it should be in group 2). Was extended a FT offer...but took an offer in Group 1 for not so obvious reasons.
Interned in Group 2 and going back to the same firm.
and going to a diff Group 1 firm for S&T
Interned in Group 1 going back to same firm
interned in group 1, going to different group 1.
interned in group 1, accepted same group at group 1
interened in group 1, joined a diff group.
Summer at group 2 and signed on.
for those that switched why?
Summered in group 1, going to a different firm in group 1. Why - because I hated the culture at the firm I summered at.
I agree that re-interviewing senior year sucks, but if you get an offer from your internship and choose to reinterview, you can do a very limited search. I just interviewed with a few firms, and since I had an offer from my intern employer, I was able to contact the firms I was interested in over the summer and speak with specific groups..so I had a very limited search and it wasn't too bad.
I interned at a Group 2 bank and turned down an offer because:
a) I really hated the culture and heard better stuff about other places from friends who interned there b) I hated these few people in particular c) I was confident I would get a better offer anyway
I was going to shop around (at everything) even before I started my internship, let alone during the internship whenI found out how much I disliked the team. After all, I wanted to see how attractive I was as a candidate and also to see if there were unexpected offers. I made the mistake of taking my internship offer too quickly and turning down interviews for a few other places. I wasn't going to make that mistake again!!
