How much do self-evaluations matter?

Tis the season for (my first) annual review, which includes writing self evaluations. I understand the huge importance of evaluations from my associate / vice president references, but does it really matter what I end up writing myself? Just trying to figure what's the appropriate amount of effort to put into this. Thanks WSO!

Your staffer and the D/MDs have the loudest voice in your review, especially if you’re in a small group and they know you and your work.

If you’re in a large group where the staffer and MDs don’t really know who you are or what year you joined, the opinions of respected associates/VPs matters a lot.

Should definitely highlight your positive contributions/learnings/experiences in your performance review. Old group heads love to see junior “development” and “growth” from being at the firm. Good luck!
