How to be a better culture fit as a London IB intern

As someone who did not grow up in a First World country & therefore largely unfamiliar with First World basic social skills, what are mistakes you have seen in such mistakes that should be avoided?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key mistakes to avoid to be a better culture fit as a London IB intern, especially if you're unfamiliar with First World social skills:

  1. Being Too Pushy with Your Own Objectives:

    • Avoid focusing solely on your own goals and talking only about yourself. Networking and interactions should be a two-way street where you show genuine interest in others.
  2. Incorrect Details in Communication:

    • Double-check names and company details before sending emails or LinkedIn messages. Sending a message with the wrong recipient's name or company can be a significant faux pas.
  3. Overly Flattering or Fawning Behavior:

    • Avoid asking overly flattering questions like "What is the secret behind your incredible success?" This can come off as insincere and unprofessional.
  4. Inappropriate Attire:

    • Dress appropriately for the workplace. Avoid wearing anything that stands out too much, like a bowtie, which can be seen as unprofessional or out of place.
  5. Fear of Reaching Out:

    • Don’t be afraid to reach out to people, attend work events, or ask for help. Overcoming this fear can lead to deeper and more meaningful relationships.
  6. Making Simple Mistakes:

    • Pay attention to detail in all interactions. Avoid providing wrong answers, making haphazard statements, or putting someone in an uncomfortable position.
  7. Not Admitting When You Don’t Know Something:

    • If you don’t know a lot about markets or deals, admit it and ask genuine questions. Bankers appreciate honesty and a willingness to learn.

By avoiding these mistakes, you can better integrate into the culture and make a positive impression as an intern in London’s investment banking scene.

  1. Don't flaunt your wealth, even if totally newfound/alien to you and therefore exciting to have. It's tacky
  2. Get to know football (soccer, but make sure you call it football), it's by far and away the safest sport; almost anyone has an opinion on what's happened in the Euros/Premier League etc
  3. Learn to understand how understated people are in the UK. Almost nobody will outright say something is shit, but it's implied. Likewise, almost nobody says anything is really good even if they think it is
  4. Leaning in to the above, don't be crass. People swear, but if you do it in every sentence it doesn't sound good
  5. Point stands for any intern tbh, but try your best, get to know as many people as possible on a genuinely human level, and try to enjoy yourself even with the pressure - end of the day you've achieved something very few people do in securing the internship, make sure you give yourself the best chance of performing well by trying not to pressure yourself too much to conform - it's ok if you don't want to go to the pub on a Tuesday, for example
