Fuck that guy, Unfortunately, you're going to have to stand up for yourself at least once. You have to understand that there are a lot of terrible people in Investment Banking and unless you stand up to them, they'll keep up the bad behavior.
I completely feel you on wanting to strangle the associate. I have one that will only find negative things to say every response or comment he gives and I don't think I've ever hated anyone in my life more than I do him but it used to be far worse until I spoke out about it. I even called my staffer which you should do. Also, report this bad associate to HR if possible. A lot of these associates get a power trip because they hold a slightly senior role to yours making them reckless with their words and actions.

You really are in a shit cultural group if there's even a possibility of your staffer doing that. I guess the best thing you can do is to call HR if not willing to stand up to the piece of shit associate. Is that going to get the associate fired or lowered bonus? probably not. Is there a possibility that they might treat you worse if they find out? Maybe but these are your options apart from calling him out directly and telling him to watch his tone with you.
If you have established a good reputation and you are truthfully hardworking and other people can see it, just push back. I am dealing with the same associate and decided not to take shit anymore
hope you get along with your staffer. if you're generally well-liked by others, you can go up to the staffer and be candid here. if your staffer is a turd, you are fucked. switch teams or banks

I was on the same boat two years ago and to be frank with you, it entirely depends on how your staffer and HR deal with it. Mine didn’t deal with it well and now they continue to lose junior folks due to the toxic culture (all the current and former analysts have had their fair share of complaints about same Associate). I would try to provide substantial evidence of the Associate’s behavior or else they may not take you seriously in the first place. They’ll value the Associate over you given seniority/tenure and the fact that they’re bound to stick around, so don’t go burning any bridges but make sure you flag any inappropriate behavior in a timely manner (don’t wait around for reviews) so they realize that the matter needs immediate attention. Don’t bad mouth anyone but your best bet would be to get the opinion of former Analysts and Associates who have successfully lateraled/changed groups to see how they made it happen from where you currently are before you approach your staffer as you don’t want your staffer to be a negative reference.
