How to deal with asswipe lateral MD
I'm a first year at an EB that is (was?) known to have a pretty solid culture. Most of the people I've worked with so far have been really, really nice and have made the long hours bearable. But recently, i got staffed on a deal with a new MD that my firm poached from another EB that's known to have a hardo/toxic culture. This MD is intense as fuck (pings the team past midnight AND as early as 7-8am…). He's also a fucking asswipe.I feel like this MD is diluting the firm's culture and for the first time since i hit the desk in August, I'm thinking of quitting. Did i just get lucky with my first few staffings and i'm only now getting the "real" IB experience? Any advice on what i should do?
Don't quit because you're dealing with hardship. Try to stay in banking for at least 1yr to get credit for it.
Response to an asshole MD depends on how much goodwill equity you've built up in the group. Often times as a 1st year you have to just deal with this (it is an unfortunate part of the job), but a good 2nd year should be pushing back on this hard.
Having dealt with these types many times in banking, a good response would be to respond to his emails slowly. For example, if he pings the team at 7AM, don't respond till 9:30 (or whenever you get into the office); if he pings after 2/3AM, don't respond till the morning. This however does require alignment with the rest of the junior team. Often times dealing with a tough senior brings the junior team together. Get with your associate and VP on the deal and make sure you are all in agreement with how to go forward.
Good luck!
