How to discuss boutique firm internships and search fund internships for SA recruiting

So I prev did I search-fund internship where it was literally just copy pasting Google info, now doing remote work for a pretty new boutique bank(have some clients but website and everything is pretty but incomplete). My role here is more significant, creating long industry research reports etc. When I head into recruiting for SA I don't want to undersell the experience but I have a feeling that interviewers know that these are slave labor internships for freshman looking to gain experience, so how would I go about discuss it. Also would it be appropriate to label the boutique internships as IB SA.

Also wanted to note that the bank has a hedge fund component to it too, not sure if this is this is unusual but I sometimes do equity research reports to guide investments. How would I fit that into the internship description and when I discuss it?

Do not use the search fund as an example. They all know what that means… that you copied and pasted and sent out emails

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's how you can effectively discuss your boutique firm and search fund internships during SA recruiting:

Discussing Your Internships

  1. Highlight Key Responsibilities and Achievements:
    • Search Fund Internship:
      • Focus on any analytical or research tasks you performed, even if it was basic. Emphasize any instances where you went beyond simple tasks.
      • Example: "Conducted market research and competitive analysis to support acquisition targets, providing detailed reports to senior management."
  • Boutique Bank Internship:
    • Emphasize the more significant responsibilities you have, such as creating long industry research reports.
    • Example: "Developed comprehensive industry research reports, contributing to client presentations and strategic decision-making processes."
  1. Frame Your Experience Positively:

    • Avoid underselling your experience by focusing on the skills and knowledge you gained.
    • Example: "Gained hands-on experience in financial analysis and industry research, enhancing my understanding of market dynamics and investment strategies."
  2. Addressing the Nature of Internships:

    • Acknowledge the learning curve and the value of the experience without focusing on the less glamorous aspects.
    • Example: "While the internships involved a range of tasks, they provided a solid foundation in financial research and analysis, which I believe is crucial for a successful career in investment banking."

Labeling the Boutique Internship

  • Appropriate Labeling:
    • If your role at the boutique bank involved tasks typical of an Investment Banking Summer Analyst (IB SA), such as financial modeling, industry research, and client presentations, it is appropriate to label it as an IB SA internship.
    • Example: "Investment Banking Summer Analyst, [Boutique Bank Name]"

Incorporating the Hedge Fund Component

  • Describing the Dual Role:
    • Highlight the dual nature of your role, emphasizing both the investment banking and hedge fund components.
    • Example: "In addition to my investment banking responsibilities, I conducted equity research to support the bank's hedge fund investments, providing actionable insights for portfolio management."

Discussing in Interviews

  • Prepare Specific Examples:

    • Be ready to discuss specific projects or tasks you worked on, demonstrating your contributions and the skills you developed.
    • Example: "One of my key projects involved creating a detailed industry report on the renewable energy sector, which was used to inform both client advisory and hedge fund investment decisions."
  • Showcase Your Learning and Growth:

    • Emphasize how these experiences have prepared you for a more advanced role in investment banking.
    • Example: "These internships have equipped me with a strong foundation in financial analysis and industry research, and I am eager to apply these skills in a more challenging and dynamic environment."

By focusing on the skills and experiences gained, and framing your roles in a positive light, you can effectively discuss your internships during SA recruiting and demonstrate your readiness for more advanced opportunities.
