How to Find M&A/IPO Deals that a Bank has Advised On?
I was wondering if anyone knows of any deals Nomura have advised on - have my interview in a few days. The main one I can find is the dragon oil deal, however I wanted to have a couple more just incase.
How to Find Deals that a Bank Advised On?
A common interview question to ask is "what is a deal that the bank has advised on recently?" Answering this question proves that you have been reading about the bank / firm and are familiar with what is going on in the deal market currently.
Below are some resources to find deals with specific advisors:
- M&A Function on a Bloomberg Terminal allows you to easily search for deals by advisors
- Google "US M&A News and Trends - Factset" and download the monthly report that Factset publishes - you can see an example attached below. Scroll to the last page to see the top deals of the month / year and check for advisors
- Merger Market
- Search sites like Dealbook and PEHub to find deals that the company has advised on
You can see a screen shot of the factset report below.

There's a function for that in the Bloomberg terminal if your school has one.
unfortunately I am from a non-target which doesn't have a Bloomberg terminal :(
Humanwell & Puracap - Epic Pharma ($550mm, lead buy-side, March 2016) GlobalWafers - SunEdison ($683mm, lead buy-side, August 2016) LKQ - Pittsburgh Glass Works ($635mm, co-lead sell-side with Jefferies, February 2016) Sunovion - Synapsus ($624mm, lead buy-side, August / September 2016)
They are also sometimes secondary advisors and provide financing on larger deals:
Melrose - Nortek ($2.8bn, co - secondary buy-side with BAML, lead JPM, July 2016)
What Kaz here is trying to say is be resourceful and search the Google.
A small clarification: Nomura was actually a lead advisor on Melrose - Nortek.
Seeing which bank is on what deal? (Originally Posted: 08/08/2016)
Wondering what people use to read about deal news where they EXPLICITLY state which banks are on which M&A deals/IPO's etc. Would love if someone could point me in the direction of a good news source that shows this sufficiently.
Also quick question: I've heard its good to know what deals specific banks/groups have worked on when networking and interviewing. What exactly are you supposed to know? The multiples of the deal or something like that?
Do you mean figuring out who was on an individual deal specifically, or an aggregate listing of individual transactions a specific bank has done? For individual deals, the merger press release will nearly always have this info at the bottom (ex: http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20160808005490/en/TIAA-Enters-Def… ) For aggregates by bank, you'll need a service like SNL or Thomson.
Bloomberg has some advanced search functions under the MA tab that will give you everything you need.
CapIQ if you have access to it is good too.
If you don't have access to a terminal / special programs like CapIQ, your best bet is reading the press releases for BB advisory. EBs will frequently post a list of deals and what the nature of the engagement (advisory? financing? other?) was, but I've never found a list like this for a BB.
If you are interviewing with a specific group I would recommend knowing about the space that group operates in. If you're interviewing for Nat Res and you can't tell me why Williams Cos - ETE fell through, I'm going to look at you a little funny. Know the rationale for the blockbuster deals and know a few other deals, from a strategic perspective - this might include numbers depending on why the deal is happening but usually won't.
Where to find current deals a bank / group is working on? (Originally Posted: 05/22/2016)
Hey Guys,
I have a family-friend connection at a top BB who is a VP of a very competitive group. I've met with him before in the banks office, but the discussion didn't go very well since I didn't do my research beforehand and look up the deals his group was working on.
I am wondering where I can find the deals that a group or investment bank is working on, since many of them are confidential. For example, "Current deals that Credit Suisse M&A is working on" or whatnot. Thanks guys.
Best, Joejohnsonpo
If it's not announced, there's no search that will find it.
You could hop on Bloomberg and pull deal flow but it's not group specific.
New York Times deal book has a section dedicated to investment banking, and M&A. If you look at the bottom of most article's announcing deals it says who provided financial, and legal advice.
http://www.nytimes.com/pages/business/dealbook/index.html
However you can only find who worked on a deal once it is announced, ongoing deals are confidential.
its hard to find teamspecific deals if you don't have Bloomberg or access to websites as Dealogic etc. But the best strategy is to use Bloomberg or ask a friend to do it for you before an interview and then try to read about the deals to understand what was the intention and size etc. Overall I think looking up deals and include them in your cv etc is something that IBs do but its stupid. Of course it helps to see if the candidate really wants to work here and shows commitment but just looking up something is not linked to any kind of skill or attitude.
Determining Firms in Deals (Originally Posted: 12/16/2012)
I recently graduated and moved across the country for a change. I've been working on networking out here, and I've actually met a lot of individuals in commercial banking.
Some of the people I've met in line based lending have been complaining about their regional clients being acquired. I know by the size of the deals they must be represented by MM or boutique firms in the region.
What's the best way to figure out who did the advising and valuation for either the buy side or sell side firm?
Daily deal if it's big enough or news articles or call them.
Cap IQ (if you have access to it) will get you part of the way there. Apart from that, you may have to look at press releases - if the advisors aren't listed on the target/acquiror's press releases, then get a feel for who the main banks are in your region, but of course, if your question was more along the lines of "who are these players" to begin with, then that wouldn't really help too much.
I'll have to look into Cap IQ and try to find some contacts that have access to it.
Unfortunately, the advisory firms weren't listed on some of the acquisitions. I have a pretty good feel for who the MM players are in the region, but I'd still like to know who is involved in these specific deals since I have some contacts that were involved on the commercial side.
It's a long shot ,but any connection is some connection. I figure at the worst it's an easy way into a conversation with someone at the firm.
Deal alerts by bank? (Originally Posted: 05/29/2013)
Anyone have a good tip for getting alerts for when a bank's deals go public? I've thought about setting up a bunch of google alerts, but a lot of news sources often neglect which banks advised a deal. Thanks!
