I think there is a time and a place to be a formal excel quant industry expert wiz, and a time to be a guy you want to get a beer without. Sometimes I feel like people in certain situations forget that the latter is appropriate.

My strategy with networking has always been just to try to get the person to like me as an individual, as I believe that they would help me more if they liked me than if they just thought I was another qualified candidate. Then at the interview, I get a little more formal and technical heavy, but still try to let the personality shine through.

That's my strat, but haven't had too much success so far so maybe I should re-think this. Or maybe my informal self is just a weirdo.
