How to message a buyside client for a job
Hi, I’m an IBD analyst, one of our clients a VC fund is hiring for an associate, I know the VP in the exact team that’s hiring as we worked together on a deal before. Obviously he has a closer relationship with my seniors than me, but I did speak to him a lot when doing DD and we also went for a drink together once the deal closed and me and him spoke by ourselves for quite a while so he will defo remember me.
his team is hiring for a role I want to apply to so I want to just drop him a short and friendly LinkedIn message to ask about it, show im interested in it and that I want to apply.
What should I say? I obviously don’t want to beat around the bush so I’d rather just be honest and direct but I also want to be respectful and not come across as begging for a job and also be careful cause he obviously has a closer relationship with my seniors so I don’t want to risk my own job.
Are you comfortable asking your seniors for an intro? Know that this is not possible in some groups, but others would be happy to help you.
If not possible, and the deal has been closed for a few months, I think it’s ok to reach out. Would probably not reach out through your work email though. Would mention how you guys worked together on the deal / spoke at the closing dinner and see if he has time to catch up.
I would just reach out and ask him about the open role. I would go for an email over LinkedIn to make sure he sees it, but this is a totally acceptable way to get a job
