ML is not the IBD of BAML. ML is a wealth management group that only exists in the US.
To be perfectly honest that is pretty much the reason: people are prestige whores and so they want to work for "Merrill" and not "Bank of America". Simples.
OK. But people who worked in IB before the merger, worked at ML, didn't they? That's what I meant with "the IBD of BAML"... Cause some of my interviewers refered to the place as Merrill Lynch only and in the contract it says "Merrill Lynch International" as the employer.
Both Bank of America and Merrill Lynch had IB before 2008. Merrill was more prestigious, particularly in WM, which is why the name was kept for WM. 7 years later, some people at Merrill before the merger are still not willing to embrace the fact that they got absorbed by a "lesser" bank.
Everyone in the industry refers to it as BAML but internally it's Bank of AmericaMerrill Lynch. If writing an email / cover letter, write out the entire name.

The correct way would be Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

"Bam el" is how 95% of the people that I know say it.
Yeah, agree with this
3 ways. BofA, BAML, Merrill

Pretty much yep
Formal letters/applications? Use the full title.
In every other context, everyone I've talked to has referred to it as BAML in both written and spoken communication.
Please don't ever refer to it as BofA - it's very insulting.
Some senior guys in banking still refuse to remove to add the "Bank of America" to the "Merill Lynch" on their signatures
