HR Phone calls any suggestions?

Any suggestions in structuring phone calls to HR?

My usual template is (if they pick up): Hello, my name is... Then ask them how they are doing? Wait for answer, then go with why I am calling... Is that an appropriate template? Or is it too straight-forward?

That's a good start. Keep in mind that you definitely want to get to the point when you're talking to HR, since they're not the people you ultimately are trying to network with.

Thanks! I am having trouble connecting with one HR person. I met him during a company luncheon and then sent him a "thank you .. and nice meeting you... next steps for recruiting" email 24 hours later. Then no response, so I also called him about a week later, and he told me to send a reminder email to him, which I did. No response again... So whats the next step here? I don't want to be too noisy

Don't be afraid to keep reaching out to him. Since he told you to send him another email, he clearly is open to having a line of communication with you. Also, when you do get in touch with him again, be it through phone or an email response, ask if he can put you in touch with some other people who might also be able to speak with you about the company. As long as you frame the request the right way, I'm sure he'd be willing to help you out and that he'd understand that, since he's busy, he might not be the best person to be speaking with you at the moment. It's pretty understandable that HR would be very busy this time of year, so it might be difficult for him to keep track of one person who's reaching out. In short, keep going at it but also try to work on other leads into the firm.

Don't highlight the fact that he never responded and make it seem like he's at fault. Mention that you met him at an event and have been in touch since then, and if the vp asks more about what your conversations were like, just say that you've spoken with him a few times but haven't been able to set up an in-depth conversation. As long as the vp knows you've been proactive in trying to reach out to people, that looks good on your part.

yeah thats what I am trying to avoid. I don't want to come off in negative light by pointing fingers.

Sorry last question: I emailed the CEO ("thank you... nice meeting you.."). And he responded that I should contact the HR person as well... so I'm kind of not sure if I should ask for another HR contact?

If you haven't already replied to that message from the CEO, I would mention to him that you've been in touch with that HR person but that you've been unable to really catch him at a good time, and then ask if there are also other people he thinks it would be beneficial for you to speak to. Great job connecting with the CEO, by the way. Definitely nurture that relationship and keep him updated on your progress. That could turn into one hell of a connection when it comes to recruiting, if you play your cards right.
