I actually suck at my job
I only hit the desk about 3 weeks ago but feel like I’m severely behind where I should be. I feel like I was somehow better last summer as an intern but now that I don’t have an analyst handholding me, I’m just constantly dropping the ball for my associate. Stupid mistakes like not turning all the comments, replying late to emails (mobile app never works), and messing up simple formulas.
With all these talks about lay-offs, I’m pretty worried that I’m gonna be out the door soon. Anyone else feel the same way as I do?
Just saw that someone else posted an almost identical post as me this week. Lmao guess Im just as shitty at being on WSO
Get over yourself dude…you got the job because your team believed you would be a value-add. Feeling bad about fucking up wont make things any better…figure out what you are struggling with and create a plan to fix it. The mobile email thing is such a non issue, get on the phone with someone from IT and get it fixed. You are capable of this job, stop doubting yourself and feeling bad
Thanks bro you're right, whining about it isn't gonna fix anything. Clearly I've recognized things that I gotta work on so now I just gotta execute.
Definitely super on edge rn tho bc I feel like every day the markets are falling apart even more and other banks have started lay-offs
This type of negative defeatist attitude is not gonna get you anywhere. Gonna give you some tough love here so don't read too much into the phrasing of the words. Nobody gives a fuck about your excuses man. Clearly the team thought you were good enough to give a return offer. If you suck at something, then figure out where you're lacking and what tangible steps you can take to improve. If you're worried about getting fired for poor performance, then stop sucking ass. Negative attitudes are a downward spiral and become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Realize that you have beat out thousands and thousands of people to get this position. You're smart enough to do this job; it isn't rocket science. No excuse for not turning all the comments.
Not understanding something technical is one thing but completion and responsiveness are both things you can control. If you get comments in an email, highlight each one as you complete it. Then, before sending back the revised version, make sure each one is highlighted and double check that it was completed. Double and triple checking is huge for avoiding simple mistakes like alignment, font size, color scheme etc. Not sure about the mobile app not working, but you should figure that out with IT. Having work email on your phone is crucial for being able to respond quickly. If you really want to go overboard, make an Excel file or write in a notebook every time you make a mistake on something. Review that consistently before submitting deliverables.
Good luck man. Making mistakes is part of the learning process but thinking you suck at the job isn't going to help.
Oh wow some hard hitting wisdom from the intern. Jkjk really appreciate it though man. You're right, all there is for me to do is try harder and be better. Really like the tip about highlighting comments, and I've also started printing my decks to review with a pen.
Had a bad day today, but tomorrow's a reset (though technically it's already Saturday but hey these graphs ain't gonna update themselves)
