I Got a D, whats your take?

So i got a D my final semester but i took on a really challenging course load. I took stochastic process, algebraic topology, Mathematical stats, and partial differential Eq. I got A's in everything except for partial ODE which i received a D in. Am i screwed for bschool admissions?

dude i feel your pain. partial de's is brutal for a simple white guys like us that have actually gotten laid before. if you're fucked, then we all are. hopefully a few years from now digital editing software will be better so you can actually go into your official transcript and alter the D into a B+. then it's all figuring out how the fuck to put the seal back on the envelope...

IlliniProgrammerB-school won't care. That said, any other school will.

Would recommend retaking the course if you get the chance and getting an A this time. That will essentially erase the D other than the GPA hit- in the minds of most admissions committees.

I think Bschools would care quite a bit. The advice you gave though is right on the money though

If you're five years out of school, the B-school won't take as hard a look at your academics. A lot of the admissions decision is based on industry experience, references, and the essays. Many MBA programs specifically request that most or all of the references come from industry rather than academia. In other words, there is a lot less emphasis on your academic history in the B-school admissions process; hence why it's often extremely difficult for someone straight out of college to get in.

Maybe it's a bit of a strong statement to say the B-school won't care, but the D is going to get largely drowned out by a wholistic look at your other classes with a bit more of an understanding eye towards 300-level math courses that most applicants couldn't even pass, five years of work in industry, your references and GMAT scores. And if you retake the course and get an A this time around, it's a reasonable bet that the admissions committee- unless you're applying for a Math PhD- will look at the course load, get out the bottle of white-out, and ignore the D.

retake the course. that's my suggestion. Or take more courses to give you that "easy A"

BudFox24well taking four math classes especailly the upper level ones that i took is simply unheard of here.

By all means, I am not saying that it is not a fantastic achievement, it just sucks you're up against people who took easier courses

true, but im sure admissions will take note of the difficulty. I will certainly take the class again. Thanks for the advice!

B for P ODEs may be the same as an A for calculus.. but a D is pretty bad and alot more damaging. are Ds common at your school?

it isn't good but its a stretch to say you're screwed.. especially if your overall GPA remains high and you did well in other mathematics classes. As for stochastics and statistics will speak to your quantitative ability.. you just need a good reason to explain the D..

ambition is a state of permanent dissatisfaction with the present.

One D is not damaging for anything. You are still eligible to go to a top graduate program, top job, or whatever else. A string of bad grades can be damaging, but still not insurmountable. It's still better to get good grades though.
