I really need some help - Big Four Corporate Finance to new boutique

Hi,

I have a real problem and maybe it will become clearer to me as I type. I really value this forum's advice and any thoughts would be much appreciated.

I currently work for a Big Four CF team in a small market and have done so for the last two years. I have been approached by a new small M&A boutique consisting of two partners and an associate. The lead partner is a well known deal maker where I'm from and is well regarded in the market. They have offered me a job as an analyst with a base salary very similar to my current salary. They are saying if they deliver their pipeline that I will receive a bonus of 100% of salary. They have a good track record and I do not see a problem with delivery but bonus is not guaranteed.

I currently do not have a bonus but I do get a number of benefits that add up to a couple of grand (not much, eg. overtime, health insurance etc.).

In my current job I'm well regarded and have great relationships will those I work with and good rapport with the partners. I get good training and support. In the new firm I would be right in the deep end and completely out of my comfort zone.

I guess the choice is between comfort and risk. I currently know where I'll be in five years and will have a good career if I stay put. If this small firm takes off my career could go stratospheric and the payoffs could be huge (in both money and progression) however, it could also go to shit.

I have not taken the big risks in my life and I feel like this could be great.

Am I insane for thinking there is a choice here? It will be my decision at the end of the day but I would love some thoughts.

Thanks.

It's Big 4. If you played nice, you can always go back. This decision depends on your risk tolerance and your end goal. Personally, I don't see why you wouldn't go. Your base salary is guaranteed and the upside is huge. If the firm does implode, you'll have some new skills that you can take with you if/when you decide to go back to Big 4 CF.

A lot of reasons not to do it:

-you get the sense or hear that one of the partners is difficult to work with. -you would rather have your own weekends -You don't like being all things for the firm (IT, admin, accounting, etc, at a small firm there are no support departments usually) -you like being able to fade into the scenery sometimes and not have constant pressure on you You are building great relationships at the current role that could lead to something better than this boutique

That said, this seems like a great opportunity, and if you want banking, go for it.
